The much awaited summer transfer window is here again and many Arsenal fans world wide are yet again expecting a flock of stars at the Emirates this summer especially on the back of Arsene Wenger’s new contract deal that will see the Frenchman remain at the helm of the club till 2017 and a reported £100M set to be handed to the long serving boss.
Following series of unwanted gestures shown by Barcelona supporters as well as some section of the club’s hierarchy to ex-Arsenal captain Cesc Fabregas, the Spain man could be a potential replacement for Yaya Toure, but any Manchester City bid will spark Arsenal into action
Barcelona are prepared to sell their Spain international for £30million and he is set to return to the Premier League and league champions; City have emerged as Arsenal’s biggest rival in the struggle to land the 26-year-old.
The midfielder appeals to City as he would boost their quota of home-grown players, qualifying for that category as he was developed at Arsenal.
He is good value for a world-class player, his £100,000-a-week wages at the Nou Camp less than half what City pay Yaya Toure.
City are understood to be at the front of the queue of interested clubs, which could also include Liverpool. But Manchester United have gone cold on him now since the arrival of new boss Louis van Gaal.
Arsenal however, still remain favourites to land Cesc as the Gunners can make use of the sell-on clause included in the deal that saw their former captain move to Barca three years ago.
They Gunners also have first refusal on buying Fabregas, get a huge chunk of any profit Barca make if he goes elsewhere and are a big emotional pull for the player.
He has always said he wants to return to Arsenal and has a close relationship with boss Wenger.
But the problem for Wenger is his priority is a defensive midfielder. But if City do bid on Fabregas then Arsenal may make a move feeling it is too good an opportunity to pass up.
They would have acted last summer had United’s bid been accepted. But when Fabregas stayed in Barcelona the Gunners went for Mesut Ozil instead.
City are also unsure about midfielder Toure’s future following his bizarre birthday tantrum.
Boss Manuel Pellegrini is determined to hang on to him, but Toure has sent out signals to Paris Saint-Germain and Barca.
Fabregas would be an ideal replacement if Toure cannot be convinced to stay. He is four years younger and is likely to be on less money, helping City meet Financial Fair Play rules.
City have in the past few years been notoriously known to snap up Arsenal players following their billionaire club owner’s backing with 4 Arsenal stars making the switch to the blue side of Manchester in less than five years for a bigger payday.
With City also currently set to sign out of contract Arsenal veteran right-back Bacary Sagna, after the player had rejected several improved contract offers from the Gunner’s and is reportedly set to receive more than double the wage he earned at Arsenal with City.
Although Arsenal remain advantaged to land Fabregas, but do you think Fabregas will join the likes of Emmanuel Adebayor, Samir Nasri, Kolo Toure, Gael Clichy and soon to be City player Bacary Sagna who he all player with during his days at Arsenal.
