United boss Louis Van Gaal is a keen admirer of the Belgian, and will be delighted to boost his ailing defence with a proven international, who possesses an abundance of Premier League experience.
Thomas Vermaelen has reportedly agreed a deal in principle to join Manchester United from Arsenal next season according to the Daily Telegraph.
The Belgian defender, who shares the same agent as Robin van Persie, has fallen down the pecking order at the Gunners and has decided to attempt to revive his career at Old Trafford, as reported by the Daily Telegraph.
New United boss Louis van Gaal is on the look out for experienced defenders following the exits of Nemanja Vidic and Rio Ferdinand, and Vermaelen’s Premier League pedigree is understood to have appealed to the Dutchman.
The 28-year-old has just one year left on his Arsenal contract, and with first-team football unlikely to be on the cards next season at the Emirates due to the fine form of defensive duo Per Mertesacker and Koscielny, Vermaelen is believed to have made the decision to end his five-year association with the Gunners for a reported £100,000 per week deal at United.
But in a recent contrasting reports, Vermaelen’s agent, however, has told the BBC that “no deal is in place with United or any other club”.
Vermaelen joined Arsenal from Ajax in the summer of 2009, and has made 110 appearances for Arsene Wenger’s side.
Will Arsenal keep a hold of our skipper or are we going to witness another Gunner captain leave the Emirates to bitter rivals United?
It will be interesting to see how this turn of event will play out in the coming weeks as the transfer window gets even hotter.
