Arsenal are reportedly set for a summer clear out of more than half-a-dozen star players.

This report is according to talkSport, who claim the Gunners are set to axe eight players this summer as part of a squad clear out from Arsene Wenger in preparation for next season.

It is no longer secret that Wenger is planning a major title charge next season, and the French boss is aware that the only way to give Chelsea and other rival clubs a good fight is to bring in marque signings.

talkSport says the players set to be axed from the Emirates Stadium this summer will include Lukas Podolski, Wojciech Szczesny, Abou Diaby, Mathieu Flamini, Joel Campbell, Carl Jenkinson, Ryo Miyaichi and captain Mikel Arteta.

While some of the names above are expected, the likes of Szczesny, Campbell and Jenkinson will still come as a shock to many Arsenal fans who believe the players could still have a future at the club.

The boss has already promised the signing of “world class” players and so reports of a summer clear-out should not come as a surprise development.

The exits would clear significant squad space and free up some serious cash to chase big names such as Jackson Martinez, Karim Benzema, Arturo Vidal, Petr Cech and Geoffrey Kondogbia.
