According to the Sun, Fellow north London rivals Tottenham Hotspur have joined in the race to sign Liverpool and Arsenal target Christian Benteke from Aston Villa this summer.
Mauricio Pochettino’s side finished fifth last season thanks largely to the goals of England hotshot Harry Kane but they are hoping a £20million bid for Benteke will be enough to pip rivals Arsenal and Liverpool to the striker.
Benteke, who has two years to run on his contract at Villa Park, kept Tim Sherwood’s side in the Premier League after scoring 12 goals in the club’s final 12 games of the season.
And Spurs believe that a starting bid of around £20m could be enough to tempt Villa into selling the striker who is believed to be keen on leaving Villa Park.
Wenger, in a recent interview, showered heavy praise on the 24-year-old Belgian. Confirming his interest in the towering forward.
“He’s a player who has massive potential,” admitted Wenger.
“I think some of the bad fortune at Aston Villa this season was linked with the fact that Benteke was not there.”
“When he came back into the team he gave a lift to everybody and of course he has a fantastic leap, he’s intelligent and he can score goals with his feet.”
“He’s fantastic in the air and can score headers against any team.”
