Over-priced? Gonzalo Higuain is keen on joining a Champions League side. [Picture: Reuters]
Manchester United are set to battle Arsenal for the signature of Argentine striker Gonzalo Higuain.
Media reports had suggested that Higuain is keen on a move away from Napoli, and would love to play Champions League football next season. This is something United can almost guarantee him, following their qualification for the play-offs after finishing fourth last term in the league.
With Robin van Persie joining Fenerbahce, the Red Devils will be looking at bringing in another big name center forward and the former Real Madrid man fits the bill.
United have already completed the signings of Memphis Depay from PSV, Bastian Schweinsteiger from Bayern Munich and Matteo Darmian from Torino, with Southampton’s Morgan Schneiderlin also set to sign; but Manager Louis van Gaal is not relenting as he seeks to add more quality to his side.
Higuain has a release clause of €95million. And while it remains unlikely that any team would be willing to pay that amount for the Argentine, Manchester United has the economic power to negotiate and complete the signing head on with Arsenal in the coming days.
