Arsenal vs West Ham. 9th August 2015. Emirates Stadium.
Arsenal will start the 2015/2016 season with a fixture against local rivals West Ham on Sunday.
Arsene Wenger is expected to field a strong side against the Hammers due to his current quality squad depth.
However, there are a few notable absentees, with Danny Welbeck, Alexis Sanchez, Jack Wilshere and Tomas Rosicky all expected to seat out the match with various reasons.
Wenger gave the latest on Arsenal’s injuries and his comment about Wilshere is particularly disturbing “The information you have heard about Jack Wilshere is right,” Wenger said in his pre-match press conference.
“I had a bad surprise because it is a hairline crack in his fibula that makes him a few weeks out.
“There is minimal damage apart from the bone damage – there is no damage at all apart from that. It was a collision in training and it was all completely accidental.” Wenger added.
The last time we heard a similar report, Wilshere was out for 4 months, this latest injury is expected to keep him out for 2 months.
Wenger didn’t put a time frame on Rosicky’s return from injury, with the manger only saying “Rosicky on a progressive recovery,”
Wenger revealed that the striker is close but not close enough to face the Hammers “He [Welbeck] is not too far away, but he is not ready for Sunday.”
On Alexis Sanchez…
The hardworking Chilean came back much fitter than expected which is good news to many Arsenal fans, but Wenger says he is not ready for the clash against West Ham.
“Alexis is back in training but I don’t think he will be involved on Sunday, it is a bit early maybe,” Wenger told Arsenal’s website.
“We have to decide that at the end of the week, but I don’t think he will be involved.” But on his fitness Wenger said “He came back in good fitness shape so that is quite positive, but I am not surprised by that because I can’t imagine him lying around for four weeks and doing nothing. That wouldn’t be him.”
