Edison Cavani could solve Arsenal’s striking problems this season.

After failing to notch any points during their 2-0 loss against West Ham United, it’s clear that Arsenal requires additional reinforcements when it comes to scoring goals. Now the gossip machine is kicking into high gear with new rumors of supposed talks with a star striker popping up every day.

It’s no secret that Arsenal are making moves for a new striker, but the latest rumor is not necessarily the one you might have expected. When Olivier Giroud is feeling good, he’s one of the best at what he does. However, the team definitely needs a more fluid forward capable of adjusting his game to multiple styles of play whether it be making runs or making passes. While both are individually great, it’s not hard to see greater potential for a strike partnership with Alexis Sanchez.

Many predicted that manager Arsene Wenger, what with his predilection for prodigious French talents, would seek to snatch up Real Madrid striker Karim Benzema. However, one source says the club has its sights set on stealing Uruguayan superstar Edinson Cavani from his home at Paris St. Germain. Cavani notched 18 goals in 35 appearances during the 2014-15 season but still found himself struggling for minutes against Swedish superstar Zlatan Ibrahimovich.

The report also hints at the possibility of seeking out Russian winger Denis Cheryshev from Real Madrid. We’re a little more hesitant on this one given the inconsistent success of former Russian phenom Andrei Arshavin during his four years with the club. The 24-year-old midfielder is reportedly unhappy with his current standing with Los Blancos and is looking for more first team playing time than he receives with Madrid. Injury problems that reared up during the player’s loan at Villarreal have many fans questioning the long-term strategy of such a move, especially when your midfield is as stacked as Arsenal’s. The Gunners don’t really have much of a pressing need for midfielders except to warm the bench behind stars like Mesut Ozil, Aaron Ramsey and Santi Cazorla.

Early reports show that expectations for the Gunners are higher than they’ve been in some time following last year’s third-place league finish and FA Cup win. It’s noted here that the team is currently the third favorite club to win they league. We still have a lot of faith that Arsenal could come out on top but expect the odds to dip a bit following the results of last weekend’s match. The squad should have much better luck in its next outing against Crystal Palace. However, according to the fixtures schedule on Arsenal’s official site, the Gunners will be up against some stiff competition with Liverpool, Newcastle, Stoke and Chelsea making up the next four matches.

If Wenger can pull off signing a top-notch striker to pair with Alexis Sanchez up front, the team could become a real force—provided everyone else can stay healthy in the meantime, of course. Now all they need is for Petr Cech to live up to his own expectations and things should be smooth sailing for Arsenal this season.
