Wenger himself confirmed he would sign only “top players” in the summer, and this has seen the club
linked to an avalanche of star players in recent weeks.
According to reports making the round, Arsenal have lost out in the signing of one of Arsene Wenger’s long term target Julian Draxler at the last day to transfer window to Wolfsburg.
Wolfsburg were able to sign the versatile star who was also under the radar of Arsenal and Juventus for a fee reportedly worth 21million.
Wolfsburg opened talks with signing Draxler after it became clear they have lost both Ivan Perisic to Inter Milan and Kevin De Bruyne to Manchester City.
However, Kicker reported Draxler agreed personal terms on Saturday and completed the move to the German side today.
Schalke management has given reasons why they sold Draxler to Wolfsburg and not Arsenal and Juventus.
Horst Heldt Heldt has this to say to their official website : “There are two reasons for our decision to accept Wolfsburg’s offer: We will not be disclosing information about the transfer fee, but we can say that it is the biggest transfer we’ve received for a player at Schalke.
“Moreover, we have complied with Julian’s desire to move to another club.”
Heldt added: “At the end of last season, Julian came to me and expressly said that he wanted to leave the club. I told him that we would consider any offers that came in for him, but I also tried to convince him until the end to stay in light of the new sporting direction that we’re now taking.
“Julian acknowledges the positive developments that we’ve seen in recent months, but this did not change his stance. Instead he repeated his desire to leave.”
