Arsenal are monitoring FC Basel midfielder Mohamed Elneny, according to the Daily Mirror.
The Gunners are in search of a defensive midfielder after losing both Francis Coquelin and Santi Carzola to long term injuries.
The Duo suffered a knee injury in November and have been ruled out of action until March next year. The Gunners also have Jack Wilshere out injured and Micheal Arteta also on the injury table leaving Arsene Wenger in sort of a midfield crisis.
The Gunners manager previously admitted they are short of options at the middle of the park and will try to use the January transfer window to fix the situation.
The North London club has been linked with a number of defensive midfielders with their top target being Southampton’s Victor Wanyama, as per the Mirror.
However, the same publication reports that Arsenal are looking at the possibility of signing Elneny in January should they fail to complete the signing of Wanyama.
The Gunners watched the midfielder on several occasions last season and could now move for the defensive midfielder in January.
Elneny joined Basel in 2013 and is now an important member of the Swiss club. He has made over 90 appearances for the Swiss outfit since joining in 2013.
