Wenger himself confirmed he would sign only “top players” in winter, and this has seen the club linked to an avalanche of star players in recent weeks.
Arsenal have been dealt a major blow in the race to sign Borrusia Dortmund striker Pierre-Emerick Aubameyang, via the Daily Express.
The Gunners are reportedly ready to submit a £42m bid for the Gabonese international this winter transfer window but could now be forced to turn their attentions elsewhere after BVB’s CEO Hans-Joachim Watzke ruled out the sale of the striker.
Speaking to reporters, he said:
“At this stage, Borussia are very much capable of making financially interesting offers to players.
“Add the sporting element and the BVB environment to it and we don’t need to hide from anyone.
“We might not have as much money as the top stars in Premier League, but we can offer a lot of other things. For instance, our players were able to celebrate Christmas.”
“He’s under contract until 2020 and those situations are not new for us,” he added.
“We’ve been one of the bigger clubs in Europe for the past five, six years, and are seventh in the UEFA ranking.
“It’s just normal that our players attract attention.”
Liverpool, Chelsea, and Manchester United are reportedly also keen on the striker.
