Wenger himself confirmed he would sign only “top players” in winter, and this has seen the club linked to an avalanche of star players in recent weeks.
Arsenal have been dealt a massive blow in the ongoing transfer window with top target Michy Batshuayi signing a contract extension with Marseille. The Gunners were hopeful of beating North London Rivals Tottenham Hotspur to the signature of the prolific striker.
Injuries have forced manager Arsene Wenger to the dip into the winter transfer market. The manager who has previously confirmed he will be busy this January is believed to be considering making two additions to his squad with moves for a midfielder and striker thought to be high on the wish list at the Emirates.
Wenger was reported to be keen on the impressive Batshuayi, who has been in fantastic form with 11goals already in Ligue 1 this season and 14goals in his last 25 appearances in all competitions.
Marseille were happy to announce this week that Batshuayi and defender Benjamin Mendy had penned long term deals to 2020 and 2019 respectively.
The forward immediately took to twitter to confirm the deal “Very happy to prolong the adventure with @OM_Officiel.”
The news comes as a major setback for manager Arsene Wenger who must now move quickly unto other targets as the Gunners continue their quest to bring in much needed firepower required to boost their title challenge.
