Wenger himself confirmed he would sign only “top players” in winter, and this has seen the club linked to an avalanche of star players in recent weeks.
Despite being only nine days into the ongoing January transfer window, Arsenal are already making plans about the summer window months away.
According to German media outlet Bild, the Gunners are believed to be readying an offer for Schalke 04 defender Benedikt Howedes. The German defender has previously been linked with a move to the Emirates most recently after starring for Germany as they won the world cup in Brazil.
Howedes, 27, has just eighteen months left on his current deal which has a £9million release clause according to Bild , and he is yet to accept the offer of a new contract by Schalke.
In Summer,he will enter the final year of his contract, and Schalke will be forced to cash in on him rather than lose him on a free.
Arsene Wenger has been alerted to this opportunity to lure the tough tackling center half away from Germany and is already making summer plans to swoop in, as per the report.
Though the partnership between Mertesacker and Laurent Koscielny has been quite effective for some time, the fact that the pair aren’t getting any younger as both men are already over 30 coupled with the inconsistent showings of Gabriel has forced Wenger to prioritize recruiting a defender in the summer.
It is believed that Arsene Wenger sees Howedes not only as an upgrade in defence for his squad but also someone who brings versatility being able to operate as a full back also.
