Football pundit, Paul Mason believes Arsenal still needs a world class holding midfielder as the league heads towards the crucial stage of the season.
The Gunners are still topping the league but only on goal difference after a last gasp Joe Allen equalizer at Anfield on Wednesday and with Leicester City winning at White Hart Lane.
Arsenal are depleted in the midfield, with injuries to Francis Coquelin, Santi Cazorla, Jack Wilshere, Tomas Rosicky etc.
Although Arsene Wenger has brought in relatively unknown defensive midfielder from Basel in Switzerland; Paul Mason still believes an established and world class holding midfielder is needed at the Emirates if they are to sustain their charge for the Premier League crown.
Most top sides in the Premier League have a recognised holding midfielder; at Chelsea, there is Nemanja Matic, Ramirez or John Obi Mikel, at Manchester City there is Yaya Toure, Fernandinho and Fernando who can operate as a holding midfielder, at Manchester United; there is Morgan Schneiderlin, Michael Carrick or Bastian Schweinsteiger.
This are world class holding midfielders not a player in the mode of Elneny or Francis Coquelin; though good players but are not yet world class.
If the Gunners can secure the services of Victor Wanyama; there is no reason why they won’t be crowned champions at the end of this season as Wanyama would bring stability and defensive cover to the Gunners back line. Credit to Arsenal for holding on to top spot despite their injury worries, it goes to show what they would achieve if they have a fully fit squad.
