Wenger himself confirmed he would sign only “top players” in winter, and this has seen the club linked to an avalanche of star players in recent weeks.
Arsenal have joined rivals Liverpool in the race to sign Athletic Bilbao forward Inaki Williams. The 21-year-old winger-cum-forward who is officially the fastest player in La Liga, having been recorded sprinting at a remarkable 22.2 miles per hour in his side’s one all draw with Deportivo in May is highly regarded as one of the most promising forwards in European football.
The Mail reports that the Gunners had sent scouts to run the rule over the 6ft 1in forward in midweek when he scored the only goal as his side claimed a 1-0 win over Valencia in the Copa del Rey.
The speedy star was originally earmarked by the Gunners as a summer target but the Daily Star have now reported that the Basque club are actively attempting to tie Williams to a new deal that will take his release clause from the current £15.3 million to an outrageous £76.3 million, and understandably Wenger has been forced to act sooner rather than later.
The pacey striker has scored 10 times in 21 appearances in all competitions thus far this season.
Williams who became the first black player to score in the club’s 117-year history after netting against Torino last February is also a fan favourite at the club and Bilbao understandably do not want him to leave. A deal could on though if the Gunners were to activate his release clause.
