Wenger himself confirmed he would sign only “top players” in winter, and this has seen the club linked to an avalanche of star players in recent weeks.
Arsene Wenger’s bid to land teenage left back Ben Chilwell from Leicester has taken an unexpected good turn. With first choice left back Nacho Monreal turning 30 next month, the Gunners have been monitoring the defender for a while and were waiting to make a second move for him in the summer having had a £3.5 million bid rejected by the Foxes last summer.
The Gunners were then hopeful of landing him in the upcoming summer window when the teenager would have just 12 months left on his current contract.
The Daily Telegraph’s report of the Foxes set to offer Chilwell a new deal to keep him at the King Power Stadium was thought to have ended hopes of any possible move.
The Sun via Metro has however now reported that it is a move to drive the asking price of the defender up and that the Foxes would do a deal new deal for £8million.
Chilwell, 19, was very impressive on loan at Championship side Huddersfield earlier in the season before being recalled by Leicester boss Ranieri. The defender went on to produce a commanding display when handed a start in an FA cup at Tottenham and was then commended by his manager.
“He had a very great match against Spurs, he was sure and outstanding. I am very surprised with how well he played, but that is what I wanted”.
