Wenger himself confirmed he would sign only “top players” in winter, and this has seen the club linked to an avalanche of star players in recent weeks.
Arsenal as well as Premier League rivals Liverpool and Manchester United have been left stunned by Borussia Dortmund’s valuation of top striker Pierre Emerick-Aubameyang.
The versatile forward who can play both as a centre forward and a wide man has been earmarked by Gunner’s manager Arsene Wenger as his annual superstar signing following previous summers recruits of Mesut Ozil, Alexis Sanchez and Petr Cech.
It was reported last week that Arsene Wenger was willing to break the Gunners transfer record to sign the prolific forward by putting together a bid of around £44million.
Wenger’s offer is now expected to be rejected after Top Journalist and La Liga expert Kike Marin tweeted: “Borussia Dortmund want £53.5m for Aubameyang. Too much for Wenger!”
Aubameyang, recently crowned Africa’s Footballer of the year, has been in imperious form of late. In 2015, the Gabon international scored 41 goals in all competitions, of which 18 have come in 17 Bundesliga matches this campaign. A figure that placed him as the division’s top scorer by the year’s end.
Top Journalist Jan Aage Fjortoft had earlier revealed that the Bundesliga side had no intentions of selling their star man but it is now understood that it was a move by the club to drive up his transfer fee.
The Gunners faithful can only hope the ever prudent Wenger is not priced out a deal for the pacey forward who became the first player in the Bundesliga to score in each of the first eight games of the season.
