Contrary to his claim that he would not be busy on the transfer deadline day, Arsene Wenger actually failed in his attempt to bolster his ranks before the close of the window – and it was definitely not Lionel Messi.
The gaffer had earlier that day sarcastically told the press that he would only be active if World player of the year Lionel Messi became available.
The Mirror has however revealed that the Frenchman tried and failed to do a deadline day deal for Fulham wonder kid Ryan Sessegnon.
The paper further goes on to claim the Cottagers contacted the Gunners about taking recently recalled winger Serge Gnabry on loan until the end of the season but Wenger wanted 16-year-old Sessegnon to head in the opposite direction.
But Fulham outrightly refused to sell the winger in the window as he is regarded as one of the best left sided prospects in youth football since the emergency Gareth Bale.
Sessegnon has been on the radar of the Gunners newly revamped scout system and there is course to believe that another approach will be made in the summer. The Gunners would however have to act quickly as the England under-16s captain has also been scouted by several Premier League clubs.
