Arsenal have been on the trail of the midfielder for the past few years but the Gunners have suffered a major blow in their hopes of signing this Portuguese midfielder.
Long term Arsenal target William Carvalho has signed a new contract with Sporting Lisbon, according to Skysports.
The midfielder has now signed a new deal with his current club that will see him stay at the club until 2020.
The midfielder was recently linked with a move to the Emirates in November after Francis Coquelin suffered a knee injury. However, the Gunners’ boss switched attention to Mohammed Elneny. Carvalho has now put Arsenal behind him and has committed to his current club. The midfielder is now excited to extend his stay in Sporting with the aim of continuing his development.
“I am very happy for the vote of confidence that Sporting CP have given me once more,” Carvalho told the club’s official website.
“Sportinguistas, I say to you that I am very happy with the deal which I signed up to 2020 and that you will have total effort on my part to be champions.”
The midfielder’s superb displays have also attracted interest from Manchester United in the past.
Carvalho is a full Portugal international and has made over 15 appearances for the Selecao team.
