Arsene Wenger has confirmed that he blocked Mathieu Debuchy’s move to Manchester United in the last winter transfer window, via Sky Sports.
The Red Devils tabled a deadline day loan bid for Debuchy which was swiftly rejected by the Gunners and Wenger believes it was the only logical thing to do.
Wenger added that it will take something extra ordinary before he’d send a player to a club he considers as a rival.
Debuchy had talked about his disappointment in Wenger’s actions but the French tactician insisted he has no apology for blocking the move despite signing two of his current players from rival clubs.
“You loan players out to clubs who do not have the resources, but not to direct opponents,” Wenger explained.
“There was nothing shocking in that and it’s true, I stand up for that.
“I was surprised. I can understand it (United trying to sign Debuchy) but I found it logical to block the loan.”
Last weekend’s goal scorer Danny Welbeck and Goalkeeper Petr Cech were both signed from Manchester United and Chelsea respectively but it seems Wenger isn’t comfortable with doing business with rivals when he is the one parting with a player.
Debuchy later completed a loan move to French ligue 1 club Bordeaux until the end of the current campaign.
