Arsenal defender Per Metersacker believes it will be difficult for the Gunners to progress to the quarterfinals of the Uefa Champions league after their 2-0 defeat to Barcelona at the Emirates.
The defender believes they were punished for missing their chances in the first half as a double from Lionel Messi condemned Arsene Wenger’s men to defeat.
The Gunners missed clear cut chances in the game with Olivier Giroud and Alex-Oxlade Chamberlain were particularly guilty of missing their opportunities.
In the post match interview with BT Sport, via fourfourtwo, the German defender claimed the players were the architect of their own downfall as they failed to capitalize on glorious opportunities before Messi’s 71st minute opener.
“It’s tough for us now,” Metersacker said. “We had to score at one point there, so that is why we do not deserve anything. You would never keep them quiet for 90 minutes, that is for sure
“We had a good period of time with a couple of chances and we had to score. Then we could drop back but we took more risks and they scored.
“That is why we don’t deserve it because you have to score.”
Despite how difficult it looks to progress to the next round now, Metersacker believes there is little hope of the club overturning the two goal deficit and progressing to the next round.
“I think we have to concentrate on the Premier League now and I think in one month we face Barcelona with the same courage and the same bravery,” he added.
“We still have a little chance.”
Arsenal will travel to Barcelona for the second leg of the tie on March 16.
