Former Arsenal midfielder Emmanuel Petit has taken a swipe at Arsene Wenger as the Gunners lag behind in the title race.
Petit says should Wenger fail to lead Arsenal to the league title this season, the French man should change the sport.
Arsenal currently sits third on the league table 11 points behind league leaders Leicester City with less than eight games to go. The team started 2016 at the top of the table but series of inconsistent performances since January has seen the team fall short in the title race.
Arsenal were tipped by neutrals to win the trophy this season as many traditional big teams struggled to live up to expectation. Petit believes this is probably the team’s best chance to lift the trophy as the likes of Chelsea, Manchester United and Manchester City are expected to strengthen their squad this summer.
The former midfielder has now asked Wenger to quit should he fail to win the title this season.
“You let down the fans, you let down the club because this year was for us,” Petit said on Sky Sports, as quoted by London24.
“Do you think Chelsea, Liverpool, Man City and Manchester United will do the same next year? Forget it.
“They will come back strongly. If this year, you cannot compete with Spurs, with all the respect I have for them, and Leicester then changes your sport. I’m sorry.”
