Former Chelsea striker Demba Ba has revealed why he didn’t move to Arsenal despite undergoing a medical at the club.
The Senegalese striker joined Chelsea in 2013 after two outstanding years at Newcastle, after the arrival of Jose Mourinho, he found himself out of the manager’s plans. Wenger tried to sign the Senegalese in the summer of 2013 but Mourinho blocked the move in the last minute.
Ba has now revealed Mourinho did that because Wenger had completed the signing of Mesut Ozil from Real Madrid and both the German and Portuguese worked together at Real Madrid, so Mourinho was fully aware of what Ba and Ozil could do in the same squad.
However, Ba still regrets the missed chance to sign for Arsenal.
‘I think back to the day when Jose Mourinho blocked my Chelsea loan to Arsenal,’ Ba told France Football,as quoted by Justarsenal.
‘It was the time of his return to the club, and I think it would have been a very good move. It happened on the last day of the transfer window.
‘I was in Paris, at rest, and Arsenal representatives called me to tell me it was going to happen.
‘I then came back to London for the medical. Upon arriving, I was left surprised that Mr Mourinho had blocked my move to Arsenal.
‘Mesut Ozil arrived, and to strengthen a competitor like Arsenal was very complicated if it worked.’
Ba later completed a move to Besiktas the following year and is currently plying his trade in China with Shanghai Shenhua.
