Arsenal youngster Alex Iwobi could miss the start of the season after declaring his intentions to play in the Rio Olympics this summer.

Iwobi who is now a full Nigerian international after making his debut for the Super Eagles of Nigeria in the last international break is now looking forward to participating in the Olympics with the African country.

The 2016 Olympics which is set to take place in Rio de Janeiro in Brazil would see it’s footballing activities hold from the 3rd – 20th of August; and the 2016-2017 Premier League season is scheduled to commence on the 13th of  August. Which means Iwobi could be out of action for Arsenal for up to one month to enable him get some rest before returning to club duties.

“I am looking forward to the forthcoming Olympics and if I am invited, I will do my best to make a meaningful contribution,” he said, as quoted by All African Sports.

“I believe that Nigeria has a crop of excellent players who are capable of doing great things at the Olympics. Coach Samson Siasia deserves a lot of praise for securing a place for the nation at the Olympics.

“I do not have any regrets whatsoever in opting to play for Nigeria and will always do my best whenever I put on the green white green colours of Nigeria. I hope to be involved in the forthcoming World Cup qualifiers too.

“I am very grateful to my team mates, the Nigeria Football Federation, coaches, the press and fans for the warm welcome I received following my decision to come home.

“Nigeria is a great footballing nation and deserves to assume her rightful place in Africa and World football and I am keen to be part of a team that achieves this goal,” Iwobi concluded.

Should the 19 year old be invited for the Olympics, he would definitely be unavailable for selection when the Premier League season starts in August. Should the youngster continue to develop at the rate he is doing, his contributions will be sorely missed while he is away.
