Manchester City believes they have won the race to sign Borussia Dortmund midfielder Ilkay Gundogan ahead of Liverpool and Arsenal, according to reports.
It is believed that Wenger is eyeing a move for the German midfielder this summer as he prepares to overhaul the midfield.
However, the French man is set to be disappointed as Manchester City have moved closer to signing the midfielder.
According to the Sun via Daily Star, City have clinched the midfielder’s signature ahead of their Premier League rivals by agreeing to a fee worth £30m.
City Chief Txiki Begiristain and incoming manager Pep Guardiola have already held talks with the midfielder and his club.
The report also added that City wanted to pay £28m initially while BVB valued the midfielder at £34m but both clubs have now settled for a £30m fee.
The player has just one year left on his contract and he is expected to leave the Signal Iduna park this summer but it seems he won’t be heading to the Emirates afterwards.
An official announcement expected to confirm his move to the Etihad will be made at the end of the season.
Gundogan has scored three goals and assisted his teammates seven times in thirty-eight appearances this season.
A fee of £30m for Gundogan wouldn’t have been a bad idea had Wenger pushed to sign the midfielder but it seems the French man has bigger plans for the club and has identified Borussia Monchengladbach’s Granit Xhaka as his top target.
