Having monitored the situation of Southampton defensive midfielder Victor Wanyama since last summer, Arsenal are poised to swoop for the tough tackler this summer.
The Kenyan International is a target for the Gunners as well as London rivals Tottenham Hotspur.
Following the loss of Morgan Schneiderlin to Manchester United last summer, Southampton boss Ronald Koeman declared there was no possibility in letting Wanyama leave St Mary.
Fast forward a year, Koeman seems to have his hands tied.
The Mirror via the Daily Star reports that Wanyama, who has just over 12 months on his current deal, continues to ignore new contract talks because he would like to play Champions League football next season.
That comes with little surprise considering the former Celtic man previously handed in a transfer request at the end of last season after learning of Spurs’ interest in signing him. It is believed Southampton are thus trying to avoid Wanyama entering the final 12 months of his contract as they know they could be forced to sell him for a reduced fee or risk losing him for nothing at the end of his deal.
With the expected departures of Mathieu Flamini, Mikel Arteta and Thomas Rosicky when their contracts come to an end this summer, Wenger’s interest in recruiting a midfielder or two is hardly a secret. Wanyama could very well fill a void at the Emirates should the gaffer beat Spurs to his signature.
