There is a new twist in Wenger’s search for a midfielder to improve the squad next summer. The Gunners were thought to be close to signing Borussia Monchengladbach midfielder Granit Xhaka with some reports claiming the player’s representative has agreed a deal with the club.
However, it now appears Wenger has his eyes on someone else as the Sun via the Daily Express claims N’Golo Kante is Wenger’s top target to improve the midfield this summer.
The report also added that Xhaka is second to Kante as Wenger will only consider signing the Bundesliga midfielder only if a move for Kante fails.
The Daily Mirror in a different report claims Leicester City are willing to sell the midfielder should they find a suitable replacement.
And Wenger who had admitted to missing out on Kante is prepared to lure the midfielder to the Emirates should the opportunity arise this summer.
Wenger said: “One of my best friends in life knows him since he was ten years old, and he spoke to me about him.
“We went to watch him and we saw he had quality. But I didn’t know he would come so quickly to England.”
However, Wenger would face stiff competition to sign Kante as, Manchester United, PSG, Tottenham and Chelsea are also rumoured to be interested in the midfielder.
