Arsenal are set to join Chelsea in the race to sign Napoli defender Kalidou Koulibaly, according to reports.
The French born Senegalese defender was a key member of the Napoli team which boasted one of the best defensive records in the Serie A this season. His performances have alerted some big clubs outside Italy and it is believed that Antonio Conte has ordered Chelsea to complete the signing of the 24 year old defender. The Blues are said to be in the process of formalizing an official offer to bring the defender to the Premier League. However, Arsenal look set to join the race as the Telegraph reports that Wenger has turned his attentions to signing Koulibaly after completing Granit Xhaka’s move.
Wenger is reportedly in search of a centre back to partner Koscielny next season and the report claims Wenger sees Koulibaly as the right man.
Napoli are not willing to lose the Senegalese defender and the Italian club are prepared to do everything possible to keep their star defender but it is believed that a bid of £23m could force the club’s hands.
Arsenal have also been linked with a move to sign Bayern Munich Mehdi Benatia and Roma’s Kostas Manolas as Wenger eyes bringing in a top quality defender this summer.
Koulibaly made 33 league appearances for Napoli this season with an average of 2.5 tackes, 3.6 clearance and 2.5 interceptions per game.
