If nothing else, Arsene Wenger has to bring a world-class centre-forward to the Emirates Stadium this summer. Arsenal failed to inspire confidence throughout the 2015/16 campaign as they chased down the Premier League title and the Gunners failed as Claudio Ranieri’s Leicester City were crowned champions of England.
Wenger and Arsenal cannot afford to fail again next season. Our fans have been patient for over a decade but it’s now do or die time. The Frenchman needs to secure silverware next season and he could look to Serie A for the star striker that Arsenal are in desperate need of. Here are three potential transfer candidates this summer – who would you prefer?
The Inter Milan forward has been phenomenal this season and Icardi may well be on Arsenal’s radar. Icardi, who scored 16 goals in 34 appearances for Inter throughout the 2015/16 campaign, has been linked with a move to Manchester United but the Gunners could hijack the deal if Wenger believes he is the right man to take Arsenal back to the top. Icardi isn’t the complete package but at just 23 years old, he has plenty of time to mature into one of the best strikers in world football.
Right now, he’s certainly an elite prospect and most Arsenal fans would be relatively happy if Wenger moved for the Argentine before the transfer window slams shut later this summer.
Arsenal have also been linked with a move for Juventus forward Alvaro Morata. The Spaniard has faced stiff competition from Mario Mandzukic and Paulo Dybala upfront this season and Massimiliano Allegri might consider letting one of his stars leave the club for the right price. After all, Juventus have won the Italian title five years on the spin and Morata’s departure is unlikely to hinder their chances too much – they will most certainly be one of the candidates in the early Serie A betting odds once they become available.
Morata may prefer a move back to Real Madrid and that could hinder our chances of signing the Spain international. However, if a deal can be done, Wenger should pull out all the stops to bring him to the Emirates.
However, it’s fair to say that most Arsenal fans would prefer to sign Gonzalo Higuain this summer. The Napoli striker was sensational this season, averaging just under a goal a game in Serie A. He will come at a price but he’s a worthy investment and the prospect of Higuain linking up with Ozil and Sanchez is frightening to say the least. In fact, opposing defences would be fearful of facing Arsenal’s potent offensive unit.
With the Argentina international leading the line, Arsenal might finally get their hands on the Premier League title. They will certainly stand a much better chance with Higuain upfront than they currently do with Giroud.
