Arsenal are in a three-horse race to sign Wolfsburg defender Ricardo Rodriguez, according to reports.
The left back is being linked with a move to the Emirates and it is believed Wenger is prepared to activate the player’s €25m release clause as he searches for a replacement for Kieran Gibbs who is keen on a move away from the club this summer. However, Swiss publication Blick via 101greatgoals claims the Gunners would have to battle Real Madrid and Roma to sign Rodriguez.
Rodriguez, 23, is regarded as one of the best left backs in the world and the defender is keen on taking the next step in his career by moving to a big club.
Wolfsburg had wanted to keep the player next season but the 23 year old has informed the club that he doesn’t see his future with them and the club are now open to the player’s sale.
Wolfsburg Sporting director Klaus Allofs revealed this to Blick newspaper.
“Rici has stated that his future is not with us,” Allofs said .
“But we can live with this decision.”
Arsenal wouldn’t want to pass up the opportunity of signing the defender this summer and Wenger is expected to keep a close watch on the player’s situation. Rodriguez father revealed in April that his son his open to a move to the Bernabeu but the return of Fabio Coentrao could make the Los Blancos turn down the opportunity of signing a new left back, giving Arsenal a huge boost in the race to sign the Switzerland international.
