Arsenal are reportedly in search of a centre-back this summer and the club has been linked with a number of top defenders in Europe. There is a surprise name now being linked with a move to the Emirates and it’s Zenith St Petersburg’s Ezequiel Garay.
Garay, 29, is a long-term target of Manchester United and has been linked with the Old Trafford club again this summer but Italian website Tuttosport via Daily Cannon claims the defender has set his heart on a move to the Emirates.
The defender who joined Zenith from Benfica in 2014 is said to be seeking a move away from Russia. Manchester United and Inter Milan are very keen on his services but the player wants to move to Arsenal.
Inter Milan wants him to replace Jeison Murillo who has also been linked with a move to the Emirates.
It is very unlikely that Wenger would make a move for Garay as the Argentine is closing in on his 30th birthday and with Koscielny and Mertesacker already above 30, Wenger is believed to be keen on a young centre back which definitely rules out a move for Garay.
The Argentine’s injury record also puts a move to the Emirates in doubt as the 29-year-old only managed 28 league appearances for Zenith last season and Wenger wouldn’t want to sign an injury prone defender to partner Koscielny.
It is very clear that Wenger is keen on defender but a move for Garay is very unlikely despite the player’s desire to move to the club.
