Arsenal could resign former defender Thomas Vermaelen, according to reports in Spain.
Wenger is reportedly keen on a centre back to bolster his defense and has been linked with a number of top defenders within and outside England. However, the recent name being linked with a move to the Emirates is a familiar face. Vermaelen moved to Barcelona in 2014 and struggled to make an impact at the Camp Nou. He is now set to leave the Spanish club after the La Liga champions completed the signing of Samuel Umtiti and Lucas Digne. According to Spanish Publication Sport via the Metro, Vermaelen has set his sight on a return to the Premier League and would prefer a move back to Arsenal.
The defender had a wonderful first stint at the Emirates, he was a key player for the club and was even captain after the departure of Robin Van Persie. However, injuries began to frustrate the Belgian international towards the end of his first stint at the club before securing a move to Barcelona.
Despite the fact that Wenger is keen on signing a centre back, it is unlikely that the French man would move for Vermaelen who is already 30 years old. However, it wouldn’t be surprising if we see Vermaelen wearing a Gunner shirt again as Wenger has a knack of bringing former players back for second spell. Mathieu Flamini, Thierry Henry and Sol Campbel have all had second spell at the club under Arsene Wenger.
