Arsenal would likely miss out on one of its top defensive targets Kostas Manolas, according to reports.
Manolas currently plies his trade for AS Roma and has been impressive for the Serie A side since moving to the club in 2014. His impressive performances haven’t gone unnoticed by Wenger and it was claimed that the French tactician is keeping close tabs on Manolas’ situation at Roma.
However, Wenger is set to be disappointed as Roma are close to agreeing a contract extension with the defender.
According to Italian Journalist Gianluca Di Marzio via Shoot.co.uk, AS Roma are trying to fend of interest from Arsenal and have offered the player a new contract. Roma are prepared to match the player’s wage demands in order to prevent him from pushing for a move away from the club.
Manolas made 45 appearances for Roma in all competition last season and is regarded as one of the most important players in the Serie A club.
Chelsea are also said to be keen on the defender and are set to face the same disappointment as Arsenal.
Wenger recently completed the signing of Bolton’s centre back Rob Holding and with Mertesacker, Gabriel and Koscielny still in the squad, Wenger might just opt not to sign another centre back this summer.
