Arsenal have reportedly identified the centre back position as an area that needs reinforcement this summer and the club is now stepping up its attempt to sign one before the start of the season. The defense came under criticism on different occasions last season and Wenger is keen to strengthen this summer.
According to Football Italia via Redlondon.net, Arsenal have contacted Napoli about the possibility of signing the defender.
It is believed the Gunners are hoping to reach a £40m agreement with the Italian club. The Italian giants are reluctant to sell but could be forced to cash in on the 25-year-old after the player agent’s recent comment.
It is believed the relationship between the player and the club have strained and the agent has revealed the 25-year-old is now pushing for a move away from the club.
“The player wants to leave the club. He doesn’t want to renew.” Satin said.
“Napoli keep saying he’s a top player, but their contract offer suggests they think otherwise.”
Chelsea and Everton are also interested in the defender and could rival Arsenal for his services. With Per Mertesacker reportedly suffering an injury which will rule him out of the start of the season, signing a centre back has never been more urgent and Wenger is expected to act fast.
