Arsene Wenger has revealed he is looking to sign an experienced centre-back this summer following the injury to Per Mertesacker. The veteran defender suffered a serious injury in the Gunners’ preseason game against Lens and is set to miss the start of the season.

Wenger has been keen on signing a striker but Mertesacker’s injury is now expected to hasten the process. Gabriel Paulista is also suffering from a minor injury while Laurent Koscielny is expected to miss the start of the season too, due to France’s involvement in the Euro 2016 final. Wenger is now left with just Calum Chambers and new boy Rob Holding.

The manager has now revealed he is looking to sign an experienced centre-half as soon as possible to provide depth before the start of the season.

“We have bad news on Per Mertesacker. He played in Lens on Friday night, he finished the game and had a little pain on his knee. We found out the next day that it was much more serious than expected. He had surgery yesterday in Germany. It all went well. I know you will ask me for how long he will be out. I don’t know that, it’s [some] months, but I don’t know [exactly] how long he will be out for,” Wenger told Arsenal’s official website, via Ibtimes.

“We have to look for an option to get a bit more experience. We will see some of our young centre backs on Thursday as well. With Per being out, we are a bit short on the experience front and we are looking to bring somebody in,” he added.

The Gunners have been linked with the likes of Kalidou Koulibaly and Jeison Murillo already this summer.
