Arsenal now have a rival for the signature of Shkodran Mustafi, according to reports.
The Gunners are believed to be keen on the Valencia man and have already seen an opening bid worth £15.8m rejected. The club are still mulling over returning with an improved offer and it appears they would now face competition for the German’s services.
According to the Daily Express, Chelsea would now rival Arsenal in the race to sign the 24 year old defender. Chelsea boss Antonio Conte is keen on strengthening his defense and is now eyeing a move for the Gunners target.
Just like Wenger, Conte is a big admirer of Mustafi and sees him as an ideal addition to his squad.
The player has a £42.4m release clause in his contract but interested clubs would pay about half of that amount to sign the defender.
Valencia are in financial troubles and are prepared to sell the defender for around £20m to help balance their book.
Arsenal are still leading the race to sign the defender but would not find it easy to fight off competition from Chelsea.
Wenger is also keeping tabs on West Brom’s Johnny Evans and Swansea’s Federico Fernandez and would turn to either of the players should a move for Mustafi appear difficult to complete.
