Arsenal have entered talks to sign Valencia defender Shkodran Mustafi, according to reports.

Wenger has always stated he is keen on signing a defender but the French man has been made to step up his efforts after losing both Per Mertesacker and Gabriel Paulista to injury.

The Gunners are now left short at the back ahead of the vital season opening clash at the Emirates against arch rivals Liverpool and Wenger is keen on shoring up his defence with a new signing ahead of the match.

Despite the obvious shortage in Arsenal’s backline, the bookies odds show Arsenal are favourite to win the match against Jurgen Klopp’s Liverpool side on Sunday.

It was earlier reported that Arsenal made enquiries about Mustafi and have now stepped up its pursuit.

According to Sky Sports via Football Insider, Arsenal have opened talks to sign the German defender. The defender has a £42m release clause but the deal is expected to cost the Gunners a total of £33.4m. The fee would be broken down into a £25m initial fee and an additional £8.4m based on add ons and performance related bonus

Although a formal offer is yet to be made but the club are in talks with the player’s representative over a possible move.

Mustafi was a key member of the German squad and the defender helped Joachim Low’s troops to the Semi Final stage, scoring the team’s first goal in the process.

The defender is seen as a leader and an experienced player despite being just 24 years of age. The defender is also not a stranger to the Premier League spending 3 years at Everton and he would be a quality addition to the squad
