Arsene Wenger has revealed he feels “guilt and regret” after losing last season’s title to Leicester City.
The club had a big opportunity to win the league last term as other traditional big teams failed to live up to their standards. We were favorites to win the league until February when the club’s form took a downward turn. Leicester took advantage of the opportunity and moved firmly ahead in the title race, a late surge by the Gunners could only earn us a second place finish.
Wenger has now revealed he still feels guilty the club missed a unique opportunity to win the league.
‘There is regret and a feeling of guilt,’ said Wenger.
‘That is not to take anything from Leicester who had an exceptional season. Their numbers show it. They lost only three games. When you lose just three games in a difficult league like that then you are a fantastic champion.
‘There’s guilt because you would not have predicted Leicester [to win the league]. What they have done is absolutely exceptional.’
Wenger is hoping the team make up for the lost opportunity this season but has admitted it will not be an easy task. The boss believes as many as eight clubs are in the title race this season
He said: “That’s very difficult to predict and is one of the problems in the modern Premier League, who expected Leicester to be champions last season? Nobody.
“Today you have to take into account seven or eight teams who can win it.
“You always have a surprising team and then six or seven big clubs who have the ambition to win it.”
