Arsenal Legend Ian Wright believes the club have to spend big on players between now and the end of the transfer window or risk falling behind its rivals this season.
The Gunners legend was unhappy with the club’s performance against Liverpool last weekend and he believes lot of work to be done this summer. The team succumbed to a 4-3 defeat to Liverpool in the opening league game of the season and despite missing a number of key players in that game, Wenger has been reluctant to spend. Wright believes unless Wenger changes his approach in the transfer market, the club could be in serious trouble this season.
“It breaks my heart to say but I can’t recall the last time an Arsenal fan really looked forward to the start of the season,” Wright said, as quoted by the Mirror.
“Yes, we all know these days it is about profits and balance sheets. But that cannot be at the total exclusion of everything else.
“Speculate to accumulate? There is not a great deal of the former at Arsenal. And unless they are prepared to do so, you really do fear the worst.”
Wenger has revealed he is interested in strengthening his squad this summer but would only do so at the right price.
