Arsenal have dropped its interest in Atletico Madrid defender Jose Gimenez, according to reports.
Arsenal reportedly held talks with the Spanish club over the services of the defender but a deal won’t be happening as Atletico are unwilling to sell the defender.
According to Spanish Publication Marca via Squawka, Arsenal were told to pay the defender’s €65m release clause if they are to have any chance of signing him.
The paper claimed Atletico made it clear that they won’t entertain any bid lower than his release clause.
However, another Spanish Publication Mundo Deportivo via Football Insider claims Arsenal were not in talks with Atletico Madrid over the services of Gimenez, also adding that the Spanish club are not prepared to entertain any offer.
It was claimed by the Dailymail on Wednesday that Arsenal held talks with Atletico over the services of the defender but baulked at the Spanish club’s asking price.
Whether we are interested in Gimenez or not, one thing is sure, Wenger is working on a deal to sign a centre back before the end of the transfer window. Mustafi is believed to be the club’s priority and talks are already ongoing with his club.
