Arsenal are interested in signing Atletico Madrid defender Jose Gimenez, according to reports.
Wenger has made signing a centre-back his priority this transfer window following injuries to Per Mertesacker and Gabriel Paulista.
The French man has been working on a deal to sign Valencia’s Shkodran Mustafi but is yet to agree a fee with the Spanish club.
Reports suggest Wenger is keeping his options open and is eyeing moves for alternative targets.
According to the Daily Mail, Arsenal are in talks with Atletico Madrid over the services of Gimenez.
The report claims the defender is open to the idea of moving to the Emirates. The Spanish club have told Arsenal that the defender would cost at least £40m but Wenger is unwilling to pay that much for the defender.
However, Arsenal are still in talks with Valencia over the services of Mustafi. Negotiations over the German has dragged on because of Wenger’s reluctance to also meet the Spanish club’s valuation. Valencia are demanding a fee of £30m and Wenger isn’t sure if Mustafi is worth that price.
The boss is hoping to complete a deal for a quality centre-back this transfer window but with him being reluctant to spend big on players, we wouldn’t be surprised if the club ends up with less quality players.
