Arsene Wenger has revealed Arsenal are close to a new signing, via Goal.

The French man has been under pressure to spend in the transfer market and he is now set to splash the cash as the club are expected to sign a defender in the next few days.

Arsenal have made just one major signing this summer in Granit Xhaka and fans have been yearning for more arrivals. Wenger has assured Gooners that there would be a new face to the Emirates soon. The French man also stressed he would only spend money on the right players as he is not prepared to pay over the odds.

“Yes we are close,” he told BT Sport, when asked if he was close to a new signing.

“But I would say spending in itself is not a quality. Spending and buying the right players is a quality.

“I am a bit fed up to always respond to the same things. We look and analyse absolutely everything and we have to make the right decisions.”

The boss also took swipe at his critics by praising new signing Rob Holding who has been excellent since he joined the club earlier in the summer.

“Nobody speaks about the performance of Rob Holding today – he is English, he is 20 years old, you should be happy. But I am sorry he didn’t cost £55m so it cannot be good,” he added.

“That is, for me, what is most disappointing – we don’t speak about the performances of the players anymore. We just speak about anything else but football and I believe it is not right.”

Arsenal remain confident of signing Valencia defender Shkodran Mustafi and a deal is expected to be completed this week.
