Arsenal are hoping the arrival of Shkodran Mustafi will convince Mesut Ozil will sign a new contract with the club, according to the Mirror.
Arsenal have been in talks with the midfielder’s representative over a new contract since the end of last season but have been unable to reach an agreement.
Ozil has two years left in his contract at Arsenal and have been anxious to see Arsenal’s ambition before extending his contract. The German is desperate to win trophies and at the start of the preseason, he publicly urged the club to sign top players that would help it compete for titles. Wenger is now hoping the signing of Mustafi will convince Ozil that Arsenal have the ambition to compete at the top.
Mustafi completed a £35m move to Arsenal on Tuesday taking the club’s summer expenditure closer to £90m.
Arsenal and Ozil had already opened talks on a new deal worth almost £200,000 a week but negotiations were placed on hold during the transfer window. The club will now re-open talks with the hope of convincing the German to commit his future to the club this time around.
Ozil is an important member of Wenger’s squad and it will be a big boost should the club be able to agree a new contract with the German.
