Arsenal blocked Jack Wilshere’s move to AS Roma before allowing him join Bournemouth on a season-long loan, according to BBC journalist David Ornstein.
In the final hours of the transfer window, Wilshere told Wenger he wanted to leave the club on loan and many clubs immediately tabled bids to sign the midfielder. At first, he was thought to be closing in on a move to AS Roma but later joined Bournemouth and extra details on the player’s move have now emerged.
Ornstein has now revealed that Arsenal blocked Wilshere’s move to Roma because they refused to do business over Manolas.
Arsenal were consistently linked with Manolas in the transfer window but Roma were unwilling to sell the defender and refused to open talks with the Gunners.
Ornstein explained (via the Daily star): “Overnight and into the morning Roma came onto the scene.
“They agreed the structure of a deal with Jack Wilshere’s representatives.
“At about lunch time things started to move because Arsenal put a block on the Roma deal.
“That block was the result of Arsenal not having the best opinion of Roma following negations over a possible move for Kostas Manolas the centre-half earlier this summer.”
Arsenal eventually signed Shkodran Mustafi from Valencia for a fee of £35m few days to the end of the transfer window.
