AC Milan Legend Alessandro Costacurta has revealed he rejected a move to Tottenham because he was a boyhood Arsenal fan.
Costacurta who spent over 20 years in AC Milan has revealed he had the chance to move to Tottenham in his career but turned down the opportunity because of his love for Arsenal.
Tottenham and Arsenal have a strong rivalry between them and only few players have played for both clubs. The rivalry between the clubs is so intense that the few players who played for both clubs are seen as traitors by each club’s fans.
Costacurta has revealed he didn’t want to see himself as a traitor when he was offered the chance of moving to Tottenham as a player.
“The idea of living in London was very exciting,” he said, as quoted by 101 Great Goals.
But I finally refused and you know why? Because I couldn’t betray my English love. The truth is that I’ve been a keen Arsenal fan since my childhood, and playing for ‘our’ bitter rivals would have been high treason.
Costacurta continued: “When I was younger I liked the Arsenal shirt, the stadium, and some of the players from the 1980s such as Liam Brady. And I’ve always gone against the tide. All my friends were Manchester United or Liverpool fans, so I picked Arsenal and I’ve never changed my mind.”
Costacurta played against Arsenal just twice in his career, helping AC Milan to a 2-0 aggregate win in the 1995 European Super Cup.
