Joel Campbell has revealed the decision to leave Arsenal for Sporting Lisbon was solely his own and not Arsenal’s.
The Costa Rica winger completed a move to Sporting in the final days of the transfer window and he has now revealed it wasn’t Arsenal’s decision to send him out on loan.
Campbell recently gave the impression he was forced out of Arsenal when he claimed he deserved more first team opportunities after his performances for the club last year.
He has now revealed he was the one who chose to join Sporting because he was unsure if he would play regularly at the Emirates.
“I am at an important step in my career and saw that I would not have many chances to play at Arsenal, so I asked to go on loan,” the 24-year- old told A Bola (via AOL ). “I could have chosen to stay, have a good salary, but I’d rather go after my dreams.
“I want to continue to develop and maintain this passion for the game. Sporting is a good opportunity in my career, a great team. I am happy with the decision I made.”
Since becoming a Gunner in 2011, Campbell has only made 23 appearances for Arsenal and has gone out on loan to five different clubs.
