Arsenal legend Martin Keown believes Arsene Wenger would have signed John stones for Arsenal if he was affordable.
Stones joined Manchester City for around £47.5m in the just concluded transfer window and Keown reckons he would have been a good signing for the Gunners.
Keown believes Wenger would have wanted the former Everton defender because of his style of play. The legend believes the 22 year old style of play would have fitted perfectly into Arsenal’s.
“Arsene Wenger would have wanted him if he could have afforded him. He is of the opinion that central defenders need to be technical players.
“He’s not so bothered about having giants in central defence – he’d rather have mobile, technical defenders – and is always on the lookout for a young, English centre back.
“Would Stones have improved Arsenal’s back four? He wouldn’t have made it any worse and will no doubt have come out with the ball as he has done for City.”
Keown does have a point, Wenger might have considered signing Stones if Everton’s price tag was a bit lower. It is unlikely the French boss would have sanctioned a £47.5m bid to sign the England international.
Arsenal ended up signing Shkodran Mustafi for around £35m and it even took a lot of effort to persuade Wenger to part with such fee to sign the German. Although Stones has the potential to be a better player than Mustafi, we believe that Wenger has done well in reinforcing the defense.
