Arsene Wenger has revealed Serge Gnabry snubbed a contract extension at Arsenal before deciding to join Werder Bremen.

The Germany U21 international completed a move back to the Bundesliga on the last day of the summer transfer window and Wenger has revealed it was the player who pushed for the move.

Gnabry had an unsuccessful loan spell at West Brom last season which ended prematurely in January. His return to the Emirates wasn’t successful either as he also failed to feature for the Gunners throughout the season.

However, his impressive performance in the Olympic games reminded many of how talented he is and clubs queued up to sign him but Arsenal didn’t want to.

The defender had just one year left in his contract and Arsenal wanted him to sign a contract extension but the club was forced to sell the player when he indicated he didn’t want to sign a new deal at the club.

When asked why the club sold Gnabry, Wenger said: “We did not want to get rid of Gnabry. We wanted to keep him.

“But he was in the last year of his contract and we were very close to extending his contract.

“He changed his mind and went to Werder Bremen. I think we helped him a lot and if you asked him the question, he would certainly come out and agree with that.”

Gnabry featured just 10 times for Arsenal despite making his first team debut in 2012, the midfielder will be hoping his move to Germany will give him the chance to kick start his career and fulfill his potential.
