Arsene Wenger admits he regrets missing out on Chelsea striker Diego Costa.
The Brazilian striker joined Chelsea in 2014 and Wenger has revealed he was interested in signing the striker before he moved to West London.
Arsenal faced Costa’s Chelsea on Saturday evening and speaking before the game, Wenger revealed he would have made a move for the striker but didn’t expect him to leave Atletico Madrid when he did.
Costa is regarded as a villain in the Premier League because of his character but Wenger has hailed his qualities as a player. The French man also admitted he would have loved the striker in his squad.
“I was surprised when Costa signed for Chelsea because I never thought he would leave Atletico Madrid at the time,” Wenger confesses.
“Of course I would have liked to sign him because I like his qualities as a player.”
Costa is a controversial figure on the pitch, always winding up opposition defenders and the boss believes the striker will be a better player if he cuts out the provocative side of his game.
“You want full commitment from every player but that is different from these kind of over- reactions.
“He is certainly a fighter and you respect that, but it’s all the rest around him that is not needed.
“The rest is down to the referees to get the game and the rules respected but it looks to me that he has started to clean up his act this season.
Costa is regarded as one of the best strikers in the Premier League and his character aside, he would have been a quality addition to our squad.
Arsenal have lacked a top striker all these years and if we had someone like Costa, there is a chance we would have long ended our wait for the Premier League title.
The striker has begun this season he fine form and already has five goals to his name this term but had a frustrating evening on Saturday when we thrashed his side 3-0 at the Emirates.
