Arsene Wenger has compared in form Arsenal star Alexis Sanchez to Barcelona striker Luis Suarez.

Sanchez joined Arsenal in the summer of 2014 from Barcelona following the arrival of Suarez at the Camp Nou.

Arsenal had tried to sign Suarez a year before but was unsuccessful. The club’s attempt to sign the Uruguay international was one of the transfer sagas in the summer of 2013 with the club making a £40m +£1 bid for the striker which was rejected by liverpool.

Suarez completed a move to Barcelona for about £75m the next summer which handed Arsenal the opportunity to sign Sanchez.

Wenger says he believed Sanchez is almost the same player as Suarez but admitted he had doubts about the Chile international.

The Chilean has spent two seasons at the club and is now a key player. Last year was poor for him on a personal level and in an attempt to get the best out of him, Wenger moved him centrally at the beginning of the current season.

The boss has now revealed he considered playing the Chilean upfront because he thought he could be Arsenal’s Suarez. Speaking in an interview with Sky pundit Thierry Henry, Wenger said: “First of all I had big competition up front. I thought Welbeck could play there, Giroud was playing there with different qualities and I reflected for a long time at the end of the season.

“I decided to try Sanchez [up front]. He has similarities with Luis Suarez.

“At the start many people questioned that decision.”

Sanchez has adapted well to his new role and has scored five goals in all competitions this season. Wenger will feel vindicated by Sanchez’s performances so far.
