Club captain Per Mertesacker has backed Theo Walcott to play a key role in our title challenge this season, after an impressive start to the current campaign.
The 27 year old had a below par campaign last season which almost cost him his place in the club but he opted to stay and fight for his future.
Walcott now looks a different player this term, making great contribution to our attacking and defensive play in virtually all the games we have played so far. He has started this season in impressive form, scoring three league goals already. He has also struck a good partnership with Hector Bellerin on the right wing this season and Mertesacker has hailed his performances.
The skipper believes Walcott will be crucial to our title chances this season, adding that we need him to stay fit.
“We have many very good players in our squad. For sure, Theo and Alexis are among them,” the German told 101 Great Goals .
“And Theo needs to stay fit. As long as he does I expect a lot more to come. We need him.”
Per has a point, we need to stay injury free if we are to successfully challenge for the league title this season, our title challenge in the last few seasons has been derailed by injuries to key players and if we are going to be successful this year, we need our best players, not just Walcott to stay fit.
